Pioneer Insurance, through the Trees and Scholarships Programme Kenya, has officially launched the SEKU Phase 1 Enhancement Programme at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), marking another step towards sustainable campus development and environmental conservation.
The programme was launched last month in partnership with SEKU, Hearts of Green, and the Wangari Maathai Institute, bringing together key stakeholders united by a shared commitment to creating greener and more sustainable spaces for future generations.
The launch was led by Mr. Timothy Mutua, General Manager – Marketing & Customer Experience at Pioneer Insurance, alongside the Deputy Vice Chancellor of SEKU and representatives from the university’s Tree Planting Committee, Hearts of Green, and the Wangari Maathai Institute.
As part of the launch ceremony, the partners commemorated the occasion by planting 10 ceremonial trees, symbolising the collective commitment to environmental stewardship and the continued development of a greener SEKU campus.
Transforming the SEKU Corridor
The Phase 1 Enhancement Programme will build on the work already undertaken at SEKU, with a focus on transforming the university’s 4.5-kilometre corridor into a more vibrant, sustainable and environmentally friendly space.
The enhancement programme will include:
- Planting new rows of trees along the corridor.
- Establishing a two-acre mango orchard to support long-term environmental and community benefits.
- Introducing flower shrubs to enhance the landscape and biodiversity along the stretch.
- Replacing trees from the initial phase to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the project.
Through these interventions, the programme aims to create a lasting environmental legacy while contributing to a more attractive and sustainable learning environment for students, staff and the wider SEKU community.
